Growing Roots Together began as...
a front yard business, growing through small classes (literally in my front yard!), yearly garden start sales, and a desire to build healthy community and soil through urban agriculture. I hope to inspire neighbors to grow healthy food for themselves and their communities and to show them how a little sheet mulching and compost can go a long way (and maybe even change the world!).
Why growing roots together matters...
I returned to school to grow, but I had no idea I would literally be growing (food). In 2011 I was passionate about the non-GMO movement and knew that I cared deeply about how our food was being grown - what I learned was called industrial agriculture. I could not believe it was ok to use toxic chemicals to grow the food I was feeding my children! I returned to school to see what I could do to make a difference and to hopefully change our food system for the better.
What I learned along the way, after taking courses in sustainable urban agriculture, managing and teaching at an urban farm, helping to build and grow school gardens and eventually studying urban ecology; is that our food system is the way it is because we have lost our connection – with our food, with the land and soil, and with each other.

" To be rooted is perhaps the most important and least recognized need of the human soul. "
- Simone Weil, The Need for Roots (1952)
