Working with the Weeds
Join Marni and special guest speaker Kateen Fitzgerald, a permaculture and homesteading practitioner, instructor, and owner of Compass Rose Farms and The Dirt Rich School, to learn how to work with (instead of against) the "weeds."
Time & Location
May 24, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM PDT
About the event
Working with the weeds is an exploration in using and partnering with our regional plant systems. This class will give you tools to reduce work and increase productivity and nutrition in your gardens while cultivating a new mindset so we can work with these plants as partners in land management, and providers of nutrient-rich food and medicine.
Speaker bio, Kateen Fitzgerald: After 20 years of teaching and mentoring Kateen decided to create something more. So in 2007 she purchased 40 acres of land and built Compass Rose Farms, a bio-intensive family farm and homestead. Two years later in 2009 she began an internship program to teach modern homesteading, holistic animal husbandry, and regenerative food systems. Effectually, she began converting the farm into a Permaculture demonstration site, and in 2014 she founded The Dirt Rich School an education program dedicated to teaching the next generation to live sustainably. She now manages the internship program, local lectures, workshops, and volunteers.
Her passion for “land crafting” has been the driving force behind much of the program at the farm school. Teaching her students the importance of growing your own food, harvesting sustainably, perennializing, seed saving, and working with and not against the weeds.
She believes that our ability to take up Natures surplus is limited by our knowledge of sustainable harvesting practices, tools, processing, storage and the ability to share with community.
