Milkweed, Showy
(Asclepias speciosa) Native, herbaceous perennial (dies back to the ground in winter and regrows in the spring). This is the most common milkweed in western Oregon and the best choice for folks in the Pacific Northwest or similar climates with dry summers to attract and support Monarch butterflies. A drought hardy perennial with fuzzy gray-green leaves and pale pink white flowers that come on in mid summer. Milkweed species are attractive to a variety of butterflies, bees, and other insects. Height 2-5' tall. Grow in native soil - plants prefer disturbed unamended soils (no compost/fertilizer). Spreading form can become weedy, but can be easily managed.
